Assistant Manager of Reference Services
Overview
The Assistant Manager of Reference Services is an important role within the Lee County Library’s Reference Services Department, assisting with the supervision and scheduling of the Reference Services team, serving in place of the Manager of Reference Services when needed, and carrying out important activities for the department. This position is responsible for providing excellent customer service and reference assistance to patrons both in-person and via other forms of communication, answering patron questions, providing research assistance, computer assistance, helping patrons navigate the library’s collection, and providing tours of the Reference Department and Helen Foster Purvis Mississippi Room as needed. This position reports to the Manager of Reference Services, and includes evening and weekend hours on a rotational basis.
Key Responsibilities
Central functions and responsibilities of this role include:
- Provides excellent customer service and reference assistance to patrons
- Assists patrons with local history and genealogy research, including microfilm materials
- Performs collection management activities for assigned nonfiction categories
- Serves in place of the Manager of Reference Services as needed
- Assists with interlibrary loan activities as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications
- 1-2 years customer service experience, library experience preferred
- 4-year undergraduate degree from an accredited institution of higher education
- Excellent computer skills and ability to learn library-specific software
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, working relationships with library teammates
- Proven record of reliable and trustworthy behavior and decision-making
- Ability to handle multiple simultaneous projects and deadlines

Organizational Overview
The Lee-Itawamba Library System is a two-county public library system serving a combined population of 106,721 local residents across Lee and Itawamba counties. The system is also a member of the Mississippi Library Partnership, administered by Mississippi State University, which connects local patrons to over 3 million items and 68 other libraries across the State of Mississippi.

The Lee-Itawamba Library System is administered by an Executive Director and a number of departmental managers. The system has two official branches—the headquarters location in Tupelo, Mississippi, and the Itawamba County-Pratt Memorial Library in Fulton, Mississippi—as well as the Lee County Library Bookmobile, which is the oldest continuously operating bookmobile service in the State of Mississippi.
